Did you stalk the GiltCityDC ‘Raid the Warehouse’ Sale ticket page for hours only to find that tickets to the Media Preview session sold out in like… 38 seconds? Dammit. You should have refreshed the page more. And now your carefully laid attack plans to snatch up those stupidly discounted Loubs in a size that suuure you can fit your feet into is shot to shit. Back to the point: Put down those Chinese food leftovers and wipe away those crocodile tears. I have, in my hot little hands, TWO TICKETS to the sale. The important things:
- Make sure you leave a comment disclosing your favorite sample sale game plan. I promise I won’t share it. LIE. It’ll be all over the internet and if it’s RUL good I’ll share it in my break down of how to attack this sale next Friday.
- Each ticket provides admission for one to the Gilt City Warehouse Sale, Shopping Party and exclusive John Varvatos Pop-Up Shop at the Dock5 at Union Market
- Access the FastPass line for those with bags smaller than 5″x7″ and no coats. Take advantage of this. You’ll be cursing yourself while everyone rushes past you and you’re just waiting in line to get your coat check tag. Bad things happen to good people.
- There will be a complimentary coat check (guests must check all coats and bags/purses larger than 5″x7″ before entering the sale). We talked about this. Wear a damn belt bag.
- Featured pop-up store from John Varvatos featuring insider pricing on fall and winter pieces from Collection & John Varvatos USA for any boys attending or those girlfriends that choose to sacrifice their own fashion in the name of their boyfriend. Hey. Sometimes we’re their only hope.
- Complimentary signature cocktails will be served at a makeshift bar.
- Some merchandise may be irregular and will be priced accordingly. Translation: Shyt be damaged. All prices are firm. Don’t even try.
- Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps® and Popchips will be available.
Eat them.Hoard them. No one wants to be that over served girl at this event. Eat a damn pretzel. - You do not need to be a Gilt member to attend this sale but I highly encourage it!
Good luck!
I definitely head straight to the item I want most. Instead of wondering around, I dive in head first to the shoe section. Snag what I want, and if it turns out I don’t want it later I put them back.

I’m a believer in accessories/shoes first. To me, they’re what make that shirt from the Gap look like it’s from the sample sale too.
Divide and conquer! Make sure you and your friend know each other’s sizes and what is on their wish list. One person goes straight to shoes and the other heads to the racks. Take everything you think you and your friend want and then decide if it should go back later when you two meet up and compare finds. If something is truly amazing make sure you grab two so your friend are still friends when you leave because we all know no one likes their friends enough to give up a pair of Loubs when you both happen to be the same size and you only grabbed one. Don’t be a bad friend.
I’ve never been to a sample sale so I have no strategy and no idea what to expect…
I like to hit the big ticket items first – outerwear and shoes. Then I hit the tops of all kinds. I can get basic bottoms elsewhere but want to snag some pieces to make a stand out ensemble.
Flats and coffee!
My strategy starts with understanding what will likely be at the sale and what I think will fill classic holes in my closet. Some great finds in the past have been great timeless blazers, bags and shoes. A bargain isn’t a bargain if it wasn’t something you wanted anyways!
Go for the accessories! Bags, shoes, outerwear. These are the things that I look for when making an outfit look chic. You can have a $10 tshirt from target, a good pair of jeans, and some hot heels you snagged at the GILT sale and your look is complete. Also, bring a friend (who knows your style and what you like) so you can divide and conquer. Or, get double the things and share :)
hit the shoes, handbags, and coats first. now that it’s getting cold, they are what the world is going to see most often.
wear flats, leggings, a tank and a light sweater for easy try-ons (without waiting in line for the dressing room)!
the goal isn’t to be the cutest girl AT the sale- you’ll be the cutest girl AFTER the sale- I totally agree with wearing flats, leggings, and a tank with a cardigan so you can do easy try ons over your clothes.
Also, ladies, please go easy on the makeup if you’re going to try things on. None of us want to buy anything that you got foundation all over when you tried it on.
how did I not know about this sale!? I have lived here for years! As usual, your blog informs me and stimulates the economy ;)
I’d go straight to the show section because really, shoes are everything ;)
I have never been to this sale before but I personally would make a list of the things I am looking for, prioritize it and then start in those sections specifically and not get distracted by the others. I would only buy something that I came to buy, and not let myself buy something for the sake of buying because it is on sale.
It is all about the shoes…or jewelry. whichever my eye catches first. I head straight to that section & start eyeballing everything in my size or that is my style. Hopefully the 8’s are sold out before I even get through the door. & maybe there will be some new holiday pieces to add to my collection.
You need to bring your loving BF or hubby with you in addition to a friend :) They stand in line with you, take your coats as you enter so you can bypass coat check, and are there waiting for you with coats as you exit. :))
