Having just come back to DC from spending the last year abroad – and having been in a major fashion capital – I’ve realized that much of my professional wardrobe is in need of updating. However, I don’t have limitless funds to do a total makeover and shopping at places like Express, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor gets a bit pricey if you’re looking to do that. So I was wondering if you could recommend some shops or websites for professional shopping on a budget shopping.
For a long time I never bought an item unless it was on sale. With my bank account in mind this seemed like a great idea until that 15 dollar sweater unraveled in the washing machine. Now, I shop to my budget but also know that investing in a classic piece can go a long way. Thrifty shopping can take some precious time but, in my opinion, it’s totally worth it. I frequent shops like H&M, ASOS, Forever 21, Sheinside and Spiegel for discount items. Some of these can be tricky as the material of items online appear much differently then when you’re holding it in your thrifty little hands, so make sure you’re familiar with the return policies. I’m also a huge fan of discount sites like Ruelala. Everything I’ve purchased from them has been top notch. If you’re not a member [it’s free] I highly suggest you sign up. I scored my Hunter boots on Ruelala sale last year for under $80.
*It’s important to remember that while you can absolutely score work appropriate pieces at places like Forever 21, they also sell crop tops. This is not me telling you to crop top it to work. Ever. Use your best judgment.
*I completely neglected a few in-store favorites like Saks Off 5th, Nordstrom Rack, & Neiman Marcus Last Call. You can scour through these power houses online but I’ve had much better luck in-store.
I’m a native Floridian & not sure how long I’ll be working in DC so I don’t want to spend a fortune on a winter coat. I’ve made it this far with my fall trench but temps are dropping and it’s time to bite the bullet. Where can I get a good winter work coat on a budget?
I’m native to this area so I’ve always had 42 winter coats hanging in my closet for every occasion. With a little help from layering pieces under your coat, you can majorly cut down on wind chill & still look 9-5 appropriate. There are days like today however, where a coat like this one is simply necessary. These are a few of my favorites that are all under $100:
As a former dancer, I have a love of all things tulle and finally found a tutu that can translate into an actual outfit. I’m picturing it with flats and a cute cardi or pull over. My problem is- where does one wear this imaginary perfect outfit in my head? Date? Out with the girls? Brunch? I feel like it would be too much for the office.
You are 87,000% correct; It is too much for the office. Repeat after me: Tulle is never appropriate for the office. Never will I ever, ever wear tulle to work. That being said, this skirt is delightful & you should wear it every non 9-5 moment you get. I would absolutely wear it out with the girls & it’s perfect for any time of brunch. I’d also suggest wearing it on a date but it’s definitely a louder piece. Make sure that you’re the type of lady that will feel confident in such a statement piece so you’re glowing & confident through the night. If you’re new to tulle test drive it at brunch so you’ll feel your best when the guy sitting across the table from you asks what you’re wearing. Not sure what to pair with it? A tied chambray top is always a chic option or head over to my Pinterest board for some inspiration.

re: Question 1, if you’re in DC, I just wanted to add that the outlets at Potomac Mills in Woodbridge, VA (about 20 minutes south of dc on I-95) are a great place to find professional clothes on a budget. If you go in the Nordstrom Rack entrance, there’s a whole row with Banana, Ann Taylor, J. Crew, NY & Co, brooks brothers, and Calvin Klein. They have really great pricing compared to normal retail pricing. And the Nordstrom Rack located there has an especially good stock of Tahari and Calvin Klein (much better stock there than the Nordstrom Racks in DC and Pentagon City).
Great point! I completely forgot to add those favorites – adding now :)
