Retail therapy is a thing. Anyone who tells you differently is coming from a place of negativity and frankly, you don’t need that. In all seriousness, if you’re in need of a little self care and you have the means to afford that new pair of boots without stressing over the payment for the next two weeks – do it. I’m the first one to tell you to make sure you’re putting enough into savings every month and maxing out your retirement accounts but sometimes you just need the shoes.
In reality, nothing compares to a great therapy session. I’m not talking with your girlfriends over soft cheeses and champagne; I mean venturing out to find a licensed therapist that can aid in providing you with the tools you need to do the work you need to do on yourself and within your relationships. It sounds simple enough but in my experience there really is nothing more healthy and luxurious than a healthy therapy session.
Clean Up Your Eating Habits
Whether you’re actually eating clean or not, make an effort to eat more mindfully. You’ll be amazed how far veggies, protein and good carbs will take you once you start switching up your food choices. Try indulging in 5-6 smaller meals/snacks a day instead of binge drinking coffee and gorging yourself on lunch and dinner. Guilty.
A little sunshine can go a long way. After living in the great white north for almost 3 years now, I have experienced this first hand. I was never much for tropical getaways and always preferred exploring new areas or cozying up in a cabin over a long weekend but after 3 years of long, sunless winters, I get the hype. Dive Into a Podcast or a New Book
Nothing is more detrimental to my self care than getting caught in the lazy river of thoughts swirling around in my fishbowl. It’s a constant flow that’s only interrupted by critical/logical reasoning (hello, therapy) or active thinking. To keep my mind stimulated, I prefer to dive into a podcast or start a new book instead of listening to music because I find my mind wanders since I’m not as actively engaged. I’m currently committed to the True Crime Obsessed podcast and about to finish my latest book: Gone Girl. Next up: American Royals and Michelle Obama’s biography.
A year ago, this would not have made my list and now it should probably be #1. You may not always be motivated to put on your lulu’s and hit the gym but we all know that working out produces endorphins which minimizes pain and helps to eliminate stress. Bottom line, it’s effective. And once you commit to going for that run or getting on that bike or hitting that weight rack you’ll be glad you did.
Take a Bath
My favorite weekly ritual. After starting this year off highly stressed and majorly overworked, I’ve recently adopted a new schedule that includes room for downtime. Each Sunday night, I schedule in some time to take a bath, put on a mask or two and catch up on my favorite shows. Free luxury.
Create a Cozy Space
Whether this is a cozy nook in your home or it’s redesigning your entire space, create a place where you can relax and do the things you most enjoy. Personally, to fully maximize hygee, I need my entire home to be this safe and cozy space.
